💡 Ideas and tips

Interaction 👆

‣
Support vertical scrolling with sticky checkout button
💡
Many sites crop out cart contents that don’t fit in the standard shelf pane. This confuses (your best!) customers with large carts, and makes it harder to discover cross-sells. Making the full cart scrollable with the Checkout button in fixed position mitigates this.

🐝 BeeInspired fixes its Checkout button, and lets users scroll vertically to view cart contents and cross-sells

image
‣
Support horizontal scrolling for cross-sells

👗 Aritzia fits as many cross-sells as it wants in its horizontal carousel. Make sure navigation markers are bold, and the right-most product thumbnail is cut in half to indicate it’s swipeable

image

💄 Colourpop uses a peekaboo style to suggest there’s more to swipe left for

image

🔫 Bulletproof’s uses a mix of arrows and bar indicators with a pop of color

image
‣
Try a “Show More” button after the first few cross-sells

💡 Lowe’s uses a very clear-to-see Show More button after a handful of product recommendations. This is an alternative to going back to the main menu or search to keep shopping

image
‣
Make variant options tappable (no dropdowns!)
💡
Dropdown menus save space but hide variant availability. Large, tappable targets are the most user-friendly solution.

🐦 Allbirds’ color swatches could be larger… but overall, variant selection is tap-friendly in its cross-sell widget

image
‣
Include Quick Add buttons with suggested products

💡 IKEA makes it easy to add to cart directly from the recommendations widget

image
‣
🦄 Try a stepped cross-sell flow
💡
Ooni Oven takes a unique approach to cross-selling, implementing a 3-step flow right within the cart shelf. Animation below to see it in action.

👌 Ooni Oven’s 3-step cross-sell flow’s shows accessories for cooking and for prep steps, and provides sub-copy context to help users make a one-tap decision

Tactics 🎯

‣
Offer deals-with-purchase

Lange Hair presents special deals-with-purchase in the mini-cart that can only be redeemed with a regular priced item, and once per order

image
‣
🦄 Generate cross sells on-click with AI

🥩 Heart & Soil let’s shoppers generate recommendations in the cart using the familiar AI sparkles icon to indicate AI. Rather than pre-populate and clutter the cart, it puts users in control of their experience

image
‣
🦄 Show the cross-sell in context with an animated demo

✈️ Away slides a cross-sell into its mini cart with an animated demo to add context. This puts the ‘sell’ in cross-sell ;-)

image
‣
🦄 Try a “Make it an Outfit” widget

👗 Boden shows a styled outfit suggestion inside its mini cart. Rolling over the image transforms it to product links

image
‣
🦄 Try a “Complete Your Look” accordion

👚 Summersalt keeps its cart clean with a collapsed Complete Your Look button that’s expanded on user action

image
‣
🦄 Try “Bundle and Save” with a discount

👟 Vessi offers 20% off regular priced accessories when full-priced shoes are in the cart

image
‣
🦄 Try a “Mystery” cross-sell with a discount

📿 Remember mystery boxes? Try promoting them in the “impulse aisle” of your cart shelf. Puravida provides extra context with a tooltip hover box

image
‣
🦄 Try an “unlock bundled price” progress bar

💓 LovePop offers a 33% discount when you buy 5 cards, and provides a progress bar with eligible cross sells in the cart shelf. Notice the “5 for $50” badge in the image thumbnails peeking through to confirm their eligibility

image
‣
🦄 Try a free gift carrot

🪒 Every Man Jack dynamically updates your “free stuff” progress bar as you edit quantity. Once you hit the Free Cologne tier, you can choose your scent, right from the Cart shelf

image

✂️ Cuts Clothing is another example with alternative placement

Messaging 💬

‣
Try a “Pairs best with” collapsed button

⌚ MVMT’s Pairs Best With button expands a carousel of complementary items

image
‣
Position your cross-sell as “Build your kit”

🐢 Tortuga’s cross-sells are positioned as building a kit, with items selected in that context

image
‣
Try an arrow nudge

☕ Fellow adds an arrow pointing to cross-sells. This little detail may nudge users to look at cross sells. Who knows, it’s an easy low-risk thing to test ;)

Merchandising strategies 👗

‣
Use merchandising logic to replace products with OOS variants
💡
Cross-sells shouldn’t be set-and-forget. Plan for back-up cross-sells when your primary products run below reasonable stock levels.

🐦 Allbirds’ footie socks have all but flown away, leaving users to browse through all variants to find in-stock sizes. At this point, it’s better to show no cross-sell than a painful one

image
‣
Use merchandising logic to match variants to cart contents
💡
Think about what would maximize user experience and minimize friction for your cart cross sells — can you present the SKU variants that best match the cart contents (ie sizes)?

🐦 Allbirds example again — what if color options were scoped to what’s available in the corresponding size(s) to what’s in the cart? This cart holds size 6 shoes, but no colors are available in S

‣
Test various cross-sell approaches
💡
Consider testing merchandising strategies against each other, for example:

🫣 Cautions

‣
Don’t show the same cross-sell after it’s accepted

🫣  Make sure you configure your cross-sell logic so recommendations update or remove themselves after being added to cart

image
‣
Avoid showing redundant recommendations

😐 Make sure you audit your cross-sell logic! What’s the difference between these 2 carousels?

image
‣
Consider not recommending products more expensive than what’s in Cart
💡
Consider adding rules to your cross-sells that control recommendations to fall within +/- 20% of the highest value item in the cart.

🐈 Wayfair cross-sells a premium litter box with a cat tree in the cart. The odds that this customer is in-market for a boujee box that’s 4x the price of the cat tree is slim
