šŸ’”Ā Ideas and tips

‣
Show results for the closest fuzzy match

šŸ”Ā ASDA clearly displays ā€œNo results found for [keyword], showing results for [fuzzy matched term] insteadā€

image
‣
Show fuzzy matches with similar search links

šŸ”Ā Taking fuzzy matching a step further, John Lewis displays a few similar searches in case the first fuzzy didn’t hit the nail

image

šŸ”Ā  1st Dibs provides a fallback to the original search, but remember — catalog search is not Google — you (hopefully) don’t have millions of documents that may match the query. The user is likely to be disappointed by a ā€œno results foundā€ outcome

image
‣
Show search tips (with copy examples)
šŸ”Ž
It’s a great idea to provide a few tips for how to improve search results, such as: šŸ”Ā Double check the spelling šŸ”Ā Limit the search to one or two workds šŸ”Ā Try more generic terms šŸ”Ā Try searching for something less specific and filtering results šŸ”Ā Use our dropdown navigation to help find what you’re searching for šŸ”Ā Contact us

‣
šŸ¦„Ā Show another search box inline (with instructions)

šŸ”Ā Instead of asking customers to go find your search icon and fiddle with the search widget again, why not show it front-and-center on the page?

image

šŸ”Ā e.l.f. uses ā€œSearch againā€ hint text for extra oomph

image
‣
šŸ¦„Ā Try a search-tip + inline search box combo

šŸ”Ā LL Bean combines search suggestions with an inline search box and You Might Like suggestions, in that order ;)

image

šŸ”Ā Pandora takes the same approach

image
‣
Provide customer service information inline

šŸ”Ā JC Penney includes a customer service block with its search box and search tips to cover all the bases

image

šŸ•Ā Chewy shows contact information front-and-center for those that want human help

image
‣
Test showing ā€œnext stepā€ links

šŸ‘ŸĀ Foot Locker suggests brands and best sellers when no matches can be found

image
‣
Try a quadruple-threat combo
šŸ”Ž
By this I mean šŸ”Ā Search tip + šŸ”Ā Search box + šŸ”Ā Customer service links + šŸ”Ā Trending products !!!!
image
‣
Suggest top categories

šŸ‘€Ā New Look provides 2 fallbacks: a ā€œdid you meanā€ fuzzy match suggestion, and top-level categories so customers don’t need to pull out the nav menu

image
‣
Try showing recently viewed items and/or more like [recently viewed]

šŸ‘€Ā REI reminds you of what you recently viewed and shows similar products to keep you on-site

image
‣
Show popular search suggestions or best sellers
šŸ”Ž
While I harp on not showing trending searches and products in the autosuggest/typeahead widget, they can be more helpful to users after a failed search attempt

‣
Use whimsical copywriting

šŸ•Ā No results found and 404 pages offer an opportunity to get clever with your copy. Love Chewy’s doggo reference

🫣 Cautions

‣
Don’t just show results without context
šŸ”Ž
Most sites today are afraid to serve null results, thinking it’s better to show something than nothing — but they do so without explaining the logic around the matches (which is often fuzzy search or popular products). Make sure you spell out why the matches are showing.

🫣 This merchant fails to explain how the matches were determined

image

🫣 This merchant is using fuzzy matching, but should say ā€œ0 matches returned for ā€œnike,ā€ showing results for ā€œniceā€

image

🫣  This merchant does at least call out that no matches were found for the input query, but misses the opportunity to explain why these matches appear

image
‣
Don’t show the submitted search term out of context with results
šŸ”Ž
By ā€œout of contextā€ here I mean the placement — notice the search term is inline with breadcrumbs, where it’s less likely to be seen or read.

‣
Whatever you do - avoid a dead end page!

🫣 Self explanatory!
